Weekend Whipper: How Helmets Save Lives

“This was quite the wake up call to never skip out on safety. This fall broke my helmet but I walked away from this without a bruise.”

By Rock and Ice | January 22nd, 2021

At the risk of being overly morbid, turn your sound up, press play, and then imagine that in this whipper Dustin Tong wasn’t wearing a helmet… It could’ve been disastrous.

“I feel honored and dishonored for my fall to be featured in the weekend whipper,” Dustin, a co-founder of Climb Assist, told us. “I hope this inspires others to keep their helmet on.”

“Before this shaking experience,” he continued, “I was guilty of sport climbing without a helmet when it was inconvenient or too hot. This was quite the wake up call to never skip out on safety. This fall broke my helmet but I walked away from this without a bruise. Thanks to Tristan Gornall for capturing the fall and Matt Strom for the belay.”

Happy Friday and climb safe this weekend!

Oh f***. Helmets seem to be a topic on nearly every whipper. This is the one that fully demonstrates it. Thanks for sharing and thanks for wearing.
