Internship Opportunities

Rock and Ice and Trail Runner offer internship opportunities to students for course credit. Now is your chance to roll up your sleeves and get dirty in print and online!

Both magazines offer internships in editorial and advertising throughout the year. Dates are roughly seasonal, typically with spring, summer, fall and winter internships of about three months each. Internships are unpaid, but we work with interns to receive college or graduate-studies credit and earn valuable experience and credentials. Dates and hours are flexible, but we ask that interns work 20-30 hours a week. Internships take place in Carbondale, Colorado. Supplemental paying work in the area is usually feasible and not difficult to find, but housing can be an issue. Look for housing ahead of time! Please bring a laptop.

Internship duties vary depending on experience, expertise and your interests and abilities, but typically include:

> Writing website pieces, especially news (we’d like to see at least one news item posted every day)

> Writing magazine pieces

> Researching and fact checking stories

> Proofing

> Sourcing photos and videos

> General brainstorming

We ask each intern to arrive with at least three ideas for print or online articles.

Interns must be motivated and self-sufficient, and expect to work on their own. They will seek out ideas, subjects and projects and follow through. Good candidates will demonstrate a willingness to learn, have writing/editing experience and climbing or trail running experience, and detailed knowledge of the magazine.

Recommended: Experience in writing and interviewing and related coursework; a broad range of climbing experience (please detail in your cover letter or application); knowledge of news and culture in the climbing world; knowledge of climbing literature and history; and knowledge of content management systems (CMS), such as WordPress.
