AT 1.4 POUNDS and compressible to the size of a human head, the Rab Neutrino Endurance jacket caused me sharp pangs of skepticism when I first saw it. “This can’t possibly be very warm,” I thought. Wrong again.

The Neutrino cases its 850-fill down with a weatherproof Pertex shell. The result is a parka that is inconceivably warm for its weight, and sheds everything from a wet snow to a light rain. The jacket comes with a fixed hood that is snug and warm around your head. The hood can technically fit over a helmet, but it is tight. The jacket quickly transforms from badass-mode into spray-mode by rolling the hood up and strapping it down with a Velcro flap. If not freezing, I preferred this set-up because, as I providentially discovered, the bulk of the rolled-up hood made a nice pillow that alleviated belay-neck.

When the jacket is fully zipped, a little flap is supposed to prevent you from making out with the zipper, but still, my kissers often scooted the flap to one side and rubbed against the cold metal anyway. This jacket also seems to be made for the pencil-necked, as it felt tight around mine—great for keeping warmth in, but sometimes chafing.
